Quote of the month...

"Standing tall is a very admirable thing. There are very few stories in history of heroes who slouched to the rescue. Likewise, most individuals don't look up to people who are drooped over."

foto-story Friday #10-- stake boarding story

Hosted by Cecily and MamaGeek

Gather round boys and girls, listen up and take note of my tale.
There once was a boy, a young man really, who enjoyed all the usual things young men like:  biking, swimming, skate boarding, video games and a good book.  One day, not so very long ago, he was in need of some reading material and so inquired of his mother if he might skate board down to the local library.  His mother replied if he took his younger brother along, he could go.  The boys took off as they had done in the past one on a skateboard and the other on a scooter.  Their mother settled into her book, tended the other children and chatted with her sister.  Soon the phone rang, the number was local but not one she readily recognized, but she answered it.  The voice on the other end said:  "Hello, this is Mary at the Medical Center and I have a Cody here."  The wise mother thought, that was not a medical center phone number and replied:  "OK"
The young man got on the phone and in a fairly calm voice responded:  "Hi, Mom, I think I broke my wrist."  The mother not quite believing what she had just heard said:  "What!?"  The still calm young man, Cody, replies:  "I think I broke my wrist, could you come get me? I'm at the library."  The mother, of course, tells him she will be right there.  She informs the younger kids they will be going for a short ride and wakes her napping husband with the news.  The father sits bolt upright and quickly volunteered to go take a look at the wrist in question.  The mother is a bit bummed as she won't get to see the arm if, in fact, it does happen to be broken.  She waits very impatiently for his call. Soon, the call comes that in deed they will be headed to the ER for some x-rays as their son's arm is sorta S shaped!  More waiting and another call comes that IF the orthopedic Dr is still in they will set his arm and be on their way.  As soon as they arrived at the ER the young man's arm was placed in a sling and a doctor went in search of the specialists.   The poor mother waiting at home, really was hoping they would NEED her to come and be of moral support, but no they were fine without her, so she did what any woman would do, she made a few phone calls.  She called her mother and posed this mathematical question:  What do you get when you add:  one skateboard + one Cody?  The Grammie guessed one broken leg.  The Grumpa guessed a bunged up knee.  The mother also called her sisters:  one guessed a skinned up elbow, the other scrapes and bruises.  She also called her bud, Wendy who was the best guesser with a trip to the ER.  The father son team headed from the medical center to the store for some pain meds, while the mother got some dinner cooking.  The suspense was driving the mother insane, but they finally arrived home and this is what she saw:

When they arrived home the mother was informed of how they realigned the bones.... The Dr placed Chinese finger traps {not really, but that is how the young man described them.}  on each each finger and the thumb which were attached to a device that stretched everything back into place as a crank was turned that was attached to his upper arm.  Yikes!  They did give him a couple of shots, so he didn't feel it crack back into place.  The Young man is today in a bit of pain!

I once got a phone call that began "Matt wasn't wearing his helmet..." It's a terribly helpless feeling.

Oh my goodness. What a story. I would have been going crazy! And if his picture with his cast isn't enough, his t-shirt seals the deal. :)

Poor boy. Sounds like he was quite grown up about it all though. I think the mum needs a pat on the back for bringing up such a calm, sensible boy!

Don't worry, they heal fast. Reading about Chinese finger trap for the first time.

To be honest I am kind of surprised it took this long for him to break a bone. I sure hope the Codman gets better soon. It'll suck for the rest of the summer though. Great story though. Maybe Da can turn it into a poem or something.

YOWZA! I would want to be there, but I would NEED Jon to be there too. I am a super wuss when it comes to my kids getting hurt. We all need Jon's calming influence.

I LOVE the shot of Cody with his arm up wearing that shirt. Its perfect!!!

auch big time.... sounds like the fixing is worse than it happening to begin with...
T-shirt seems very fitting though ;-)

You know, his choice of t-shirt goes only too well with your story. Accidents do happen, my step daughter tore her ACL in wrestling last year and we went through that surgery and physical therapy too.

I hope his wrist heals quick!

OUCH! This brings back memories and hits way too close to home as I too have broken my arm and had to have the docs crack it back into place.
I can still hear my own screams as I was too young for novacaine-I was only 8. I didn't get any pain killers either-good times!
I'm glad the hard part is over for Cody, and hopefully his pain will subside soon.
Oh, and when it starts to itch-don't let him use anything sharp to scratch otherwise it could bleed and possibly infect thus forcing a new cast to be set + antibiotics and maybe a tetanus shot. (Oh I was one messy kid let me tell you!-my poor mom!)

Love the Chinese Finger traps too! How clever!

Oh my gosh, the poor sausage! So, was he in a cast for his birthday? I'm hoping he's feeling better now?

Ouch! I saw his cast in the back to school picture so I figured there must be a story about it that I had missed. I'm a little behind on my blog reading! Still trying to get used to our new little person and all the changes that come with her! Ha! Hope he's feeling better and that it's healing quickly!
