Quote of the month...

"Standing tall is a very admirable thing. There are very few stories in history of heroes who slouched to the rescue. Likewise, most individuals don't look up to people who are drooped over."

My World -- Places of Worship-- churches and bars

Visit the my world blog for more tours.
I haven't done a My World post in a few weeks.  As I was considering what I wanted to share about my world, I thought that it would be interesting to take a trip around town and see just how many places of worship our little map dot offers.  I mentioned this to Troy and he thought I should combine it with how many bars/pubs/lounges/taverns we had as well.  I attempted to capture each church with the name visible so that all would see the different denominations. When possible I will provide little insights in to the buildings.
The First Baptist Church  In the next lot is an education center also run by this church.
While this is an eating establishment, it is also a pub.
The Glendive Alliance Church
The Elks, a bar/rental hall.  Parties and wedding receptions are held here.
The West Side Baptist Church I wish I could have taken this one from the overpass, but it is not necessarily wise to stop on the overpass to snap a photo.
Southside Tavern    I like the bit of art on this building.
Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses   The only church I saw that was without windows.
The Wagon Wheel Bar and Cafe
White Chapel Mennonite Church
The Moose Lodge bar and rental hall.  Parties, weddings, and sometimes AAU wresting practices are held here.
The Sacred Heart Catholic Church   This is a very large building that I had trouble getting a good shot of, so I settled on this with the front doors and a stained glass window seen through the leafless tree.
The Beer Jug  While a bar at heart, it is also a good place to get a sandwich.  We love to get a Swiss Brat on rye here!
St. Matthew's Episcopal Church  This cute little church sits on the corner across from a bank, dentist and the quilt shop.
The Twilite lounge sits on the corner of the two main roads through town.  It no longer serves food.
United Methodist Church  Recently added the new entrance seen on the far left of the photo.
American Legion bar
The New Life Ministries UPCI
The Oasis Bar
Glendive Evangelical Church of North America
The V.F.W. Bar Lounge
The First Congregational Church United Church of Christ  The girl scouts meet in this church twice a month.
Doc & Eddies has an enclosed  "casino" area and is also an eating establishment.
Zion Lutheran Church  This is an enormous building and there was no way I could get a good shot of the whole thing and the sign.  As is was, the lighting was not good for this shot either.  They have a donation room off in the back left of the building called the furniture room.  A good place to donate your gently used furniture/household items.
The sign is nearly hidden by the shrubbery, but I zoomed in and captured it.
This building is also hard to capture all of in a good shot on the slippery roads of my town.  This building like most LDS buildings has a full-size basketball court.  In the past, the middle school has held girls basketball practices here when all the school gyms were busy.
The Seventh Day Adventist Church
The Breakforth Bible Church  This church meets in an old store.  They recently bought another building across the drive also previously owned by a grocery store.
Our Savior Lutheran Church Missouri SYNOD  This church is located on the same block as the Catholic church.
The Glendive Assembly of God Church
The Church of Christ

As you can see much to the surprise of us, we offer more churches than bars.  18 churches to 11 bars, not bad for a little hick town in Eastern Montana!  Places of Worship, it is all a perspective....  I do believe that some worship in a sense the drink while other worship is a whole other sense in these houses of the Lord.

Foto Story Friday #31 -- Kohunlich, Mexico

Hosted by Cecily and MamaGeek

Picking up right where we left off last week, we have the view straight down from the Howler monkey's tree.  Quite the drop, as the tree is growing on the top of a building.

Looking out across the top of this large building we see (above) the remains of perhaps rooms that were once a part of this structure.
Another room?
The gal in the pinkish hat and I snuck around the side and headed for the steps.  In order to get up to the top, you had to pass through a narrow walkway -- one person at a time.
This shot and the one above are from the top of the building where the Howlers reside. Oh what a vast city this must have been.  I stood here trying to picture it as it might have been thousands of years earlier.  The people going on about their daily routines, the weary travelers just arriving in the city.
Were these doors? Windows? Who stood here?  What were their thoughts? Concerns?
Looking up the steps to the building, see the man in the dark shirt?  He is standing in the passage that leads to the Howler tree.  It was taking too long for the others get down to wait and get the shot w/o people.
Down on the flats, there were several smaller buildings.  Were they houses?
If you enlarge this photo,it will tell you that the palace was begun in 600 AD and that it underwent several modifications.
The palace from below, a massive structure.
Across from the last photo, you find that they are actively restoring the building here at Kohunlich.
A small temple, across the courtyard.
Close up on the workers restoring the structures here.  We sat on the steps listening to a lecture on the area, my mind continued to wander and wonder.  There was SO much to see and not nearly enough time to see it all.
What do you see in this photo?  Not mine, my father-in-law's photo, I was too busy climbing temples and taking photos to have even seen it.
Next week we will finish our visit to Kohunlich.

Scottisim

Tonight, we were playing cards with our friends, David and Heather, and Scott comes up and says, "How's that working for ya, Dave?"  To which David replied, "It's not working so good, Scott!"  You must also know that David was loosing and that it was perfect timing on Scott's part.  I don't know if Scott knew he was loosing or if he just thought the line was funny.  He had worked it all out, I heard him under his breath making sure he knew the line and I know he knew it would only work on David.  We all laughed so hard, He cracks us sideways!  (just for you Ryanne!)
Can you name the movie from which Scott got this line?

Foto Story Friday #30 -- Costa Maya, Mexico

Hosted by Cecily and MamaGeek

The last port we visited was Costa Maya, Mexico.  The exchange rate here is: $1US dollar to 10.90 New Mexican Peso.  One thing we noticed about this part of Mexico compared to Guatemala and Belize is that is is very flat.
Here is the light house as seen from the ship.
Colorful building mark the costal business district of Costa Maya.
Looking down coast, away from the touristy area.
Mexican poilce on the pier.  After a hurking long walk down the pier.  {photo by my father-in-law}
You are met by these colorful residents ready to take your picture in front of this sign and temple with this scantily clad man and two well clad women.  I just wanted the sign that said welcome to Costa Maya.
There was some sort of mix-up and one of our busses was half an hour late.  It was a long hot wait in the Mexican sun.  One older couple decided not to take the excursion.  {photo by my father-in-law}
Some sights on our 2 hour bus ride out to the ruins.
There is a taco shop ... bet it's good.
Finally we arrive at the ruins, pronounced: ko-hawn-leech.  After a quick potty break, we head down the road and are met by some very loud noises.  Howler monkeys!  Our guide related a funny story about the moneys and then we quick went to check them out.
It was quite the hike to find the noisy creatures.
See em?  There were several of them up in this tree howling for all they were worth!
